Swamp Skirts

Women of Contemporary Southern Poetry

About Swamp Skirts

Some say that Southern literature is disappearing with the convergence culture. More aptly, though, it’s evolving, just as it always has.

This blog seeks to showcase the life and works of modern women poets from the Deep South. These women maintain a strong voice and show that roots and influence extend far beyond physical geography. These poets are not hyper-local antiquated versions of women from the south; instead they are modern, accessible and worldly poets that do not hide their culture, but celebrate it. The women featured within this blog are part of the worlds we all inhabit; they are leaders, lovers, blue and white collars, mothers, and daughters.

This blog is an adventure in discovery for me. I hope to gain insight into where Southern poetry is going and who is taking us there.
